green bean casserole in white rectangle baking dish

Green Bean Casserole is made with fresh green beans, cream of mushroom soup, canned mushrooms, milk, French fried onions, and a touch of black pepper. Green bean casserole with fresh green beans is one of my absolute favorite classic holiday dishes!

This green bean casserole recipe is our go-to classic holiday or Thanksgiving side dish that brings loads of flavor to our holiday meal.

I love making this green bean casserole recipe for many holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. It’s a great side dish for potlucks or family gatherings. Honestly, it’s not the holidays without this classic dish.

French’s Green Bean Casserole is super easy to prepare and is pairs perfectly with Beef Tips, Homemade Baked Beans, and Orange Glazed Chicken.

And be sure and try my grandmother’s recipe for Holiday Punch. That is probably one of my favorites and reminds me of my holidays at my grandparents house.

    Why this recipe works

    • So quick to throw together! Making it one of the easiest holiday side dishes ever!
    • Made with simple ingredients readily available at your local grocery store.
    • This Thanksgiving side dish can be made ahead of time! Prepare as directed, but leave the crispy onion topping off until you cook. Sprinkle them on right before you cook the casserole so they stay fresh.

    What you’ll need

    • Green Beans: While many Green Bean Casserole recipes start with canned green beans, I prefer to use fresh green beans and partially cook them.
    • Cream of Mushroom Soup: Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole was a staple in our household and many for the holidays and Sunday dinner. Cream of Mushroom soup is the creamy base for this delicious side dish.
    • Canned Mushrooms: I’ve added more mushrooms to this Classic Green Bean Casserole to make it even more full of flavor! Drain the canned mushrooms before adding.
    • Crispy Fried Onions: French’s Crispy Fried Onions are essential to this dish. Find them in the canned vegetable aisle in your local supermarket or order on Amazon.
    • Milk: Whole milk makes this casserole dish creamy and stay moist. (Add a few splashes of additional milk if needed during the cooking process!)
    • Brown Sugar Glazed Ham

    Recipe FAQs

What can I use if I don’t have cream of mushroom soup?

Don’t have cream of mushroom soup on hand? Substitute with 2 tablespoons melted butter, 1 cup whole milk, sour cream or cream cheese, and 10-12-ounces of sliced mushrooms.

What can be substituted for French fried onions?

Dried bread crumbs mixed with butter, Ritz crackers, or seasoned crushed salad croutons are great substitutions.

Can you prep green bean casserole the night before?

Prepare as directed up to 24 hours ahead of time, but leave the crispy onion topping off until you cook. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Sprinkle crispy onions on right before you cook the casserole so they stay fresh.
