Chocolate covered caramel Apple Slices are easy to make and delicious. Slices of crisp apples, dipped in chocolate, peanut butter, drizzled with caramel and various toppings.
Caramel apple slices are easier to eat and can be customized with your favorite toppings. Packaged in cellophane bags & refrigerated they’ll last for several weeks.
Caramel apples one of my favorite fall treats. But, we can rarely finish an entire apple by ourselves. Apple slices are the perfect option!
Caramel Apples from scratch make the perfect holiday gift. Pack them in these food safe bags for gifts.
Why this recipe works
- Ease – Easy to make with apples, homemade or store-bought caramel and various toppings. Can be prepped ahead and refrigerated.
- Great for entertaining – Perfect party gifts for the holidays or other gatherings.
- Customize toppings – Versatile, use everyone’s favorite toppings such as mini marshmallows, butterscotch baking chips, toasted coconut, M&M’s and more.
- Bite-size – It’s the perfect combination of apple to chocolate and candy ratio. Full-size caramel apples can be tough to consume the entire apple.
What you’ll need
- Fresh Apples – Use large, fresh apples – we love varieties such as Granny Smith, Cortland, McIntosh or Macoun. The tartness offsets the sweet toppings.
- Chocolate – Use semisweet or dark chocolate chips.
- Caramel – Use store-bought or homemade caramel.
- Candies and Such for decorating – Smaller toppings are ideal for decorating. Add while the chocolate is still wet, so they stick properly.
Once the apple slices are fully dry, you can bag them in food-safe bags with a twist tie.
How to make Caramel Apple Slices
- Wash & slice apples – Wash the apples and slice into ½ to ¾-inch thick slices. Place them in a large bowl and toss with lemon juice. (This keeps apple slices fresh!)
- Insert popsicle sticks – Carefully use a sharp knife to make a cut at the bottom of each apple slice, if needed. Insert a food safe wooden stick.
- Dry apple slices – Use a clean dry paper towel to dry off any excess lemon juice.
- Melt chocolate – While you prep the apple slices, use a double boiler to melt the chocolate. Warm the caramel over medium to low heat in a sauce pan.
Learn how to temper chocolate. It’s how chocolate gets shiny.
- Melt peanut butter – Place the peanut butter in a microwave safe glass measuring cup. Microwave in increments of 30 seconds until the peanut butter is warm and easily spreadable.
- Assemble apples – Place the apple slices on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Spread the peanut butter generously across each apple and place into the refrigerator for 15 to 30 minutes for the peanut butter to set.
- Dip into chocolate -Dip the apple slices into melted chocolate. Shake off any excess chocolate. Place the apple slices onto a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Add various toppings while the chocolate is still wet. Refrigerate to set the chocolate and toppings.
- Add caramel – Drizzle warm caramel and melted white chocolate on apple slices. I like to add white chocolate as just an added decoration.
Place the sheet pan back into the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to set the chocolate. They can be bagged up once the chocolate is set.
How to Melt White Chocolate
Place white chocolate baking chips in a microwave safe measuring cup or bowl. Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds. Stir the chocolate well and heat for an additional 30 seconds until the chocolate is nearly melted, stirring after each interval.
Toppings for Caramel Apple Slices
- Sea salt
- Crushed salted pretzels
- Mini marshmallows
- Crushed graham crackers or Oreos
- Toasted coconut
- Mini chocolate chips
- Mini M&M’s chocolate candies
I use pre-cut sheets of parchment paper on half sheet pans. It makes clean up super easy. For each layer you dip on the caramel apples, use a clean piece of parchment paper.
Now, how delicious do these caramel apple slices dipped in peanut butter and chocolate look?! They will last in the fridge for about a week if you fully cover the apple in chocolate. (Which seals the apple.)

- 2 cups semisweet or dark chocolate chips
- 1 cup white chocolate
- caramel
- various toppings
Instructions
Caramel Apple Slices
- Wash the apples and slice into ½ to ¾-inch thick slices.Place them in a large bowl with ¼ cup of lemon juice. Use a spoon to gently toss them around and coat each side with lemon juice. (This will keep the apple slices fresh)
- Carefully use a sharp knife to make a cut at the bottom of each apple slice. Insert a food safe wooden stick. Use a clean dry paper towel to dry off any excess lemon juice. Set the apple slices on a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
- While you prep the apple slices, use a double boiler to melt the chocolate. Warm the caramel over medium to low heat in a sauce pan.
- Place the peanut butter in a microwave safe glass measuring cup. Microwave in increments of 30 seconds until the peanut butter is warm and can easily be spread on the apple slices.
- Spread the peanut butter generously on each apple.
- Place the apple slices on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Place into the refrigerator for 15 to 30 minutes for the peanut butter to set.
- Dip the apple slices into melted chocolate. Shake off any excess chocolate. Place the apple slices onto a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Add various toppings while the chocolate is still warm. Place the half sheet pan into the refrigerator to set the chocolate and toppings.
- Drizzle warm caramel and melted white chocolate on apple slices. I like to add white chocolate as just an added decoration. Place it into a disposable pastry bag or plastic baggie with the corner cut off to pipe it nicely onto the apple slices.
- Place the sheet pan with apples slices back into the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to properly set the chocolate. Once the chocolate is set you can place apples into food-safe baggies if desired. Or enjoy immediately.

Could you use cookie butter instead of peanut butter? My daughter has a nut allergy. Or anything else?
Jessica Robinson says
Of course! You can use cookie butter or even just dip the entire apple into caramel first, then melted chocolate.
Nina says
Do you flip them over and cover the other side as well?
Jessica Robinson says
Nina,
I dip the entire apple into chocolate. You can either drizzle caramel on the outside of the chocolate or dip the entire apple into caramel first, then into chocolate.
Laura says
These looks so much better than traditional caramel apples! I always hate how hard those things are to eat. I can’t wait to try these. What a fund project to do with kids.
